Beddagana wetland park

If you’re looking for a slice of nature right within Colombo, Beddagana Wetland Park is a must-visit. This urban wetland is not only a haven for wildlife but also a beautiful escape where you can soak in serene landscapes and enjoy some incredible photography opportunities.

Beddagana Wetland Park is built around the Diyawanna Lake, and its unique landscape of shallow lakes, marshes, and canals creates a perfect habitat for birds and other wildlife. One of my favorite features is the wooden bridge that runs across the waters – it frames the scenery beautifully and adds a spectacular touch for both photographers and casual visitors.

For birdwatchers, the park is a treasure. There are dedicated spots and a birdwatching tower that give you close views of kingfishers, whistling ducks, Indian scops owls, and many more resident and migratory species. The dense vegetation also makes it an ideal environment for wildlife photographers to explore and capture stunning images. I’ve visited Beddagana multiple times and have even managed to capture some award-winning shots here!

The park is open to the public, and anyone can buy a ticket to enter. However, my recommendation is to go early in the morning, ideally around 6 a.m. By 8:30 a.m., more visitors arrive, and wildlife tends to hide, making it harder to spot birds and other animals. Early mornings offer quiet, soft light, and the best chance to observe the wetland’s residents undisturbed.

Beyond its beauty and wildlife, Beddagana Wetland Park plays a crucial ecological role in flood control, groundwater recharge, and supporting urban biodiversity. Walking along the trails, watching the water shimmer under the morning light, and spotting birds in their natural habitat makes it a refreshing escape from the city.

For anyone in Colombo wanting a mix of relaxation, nature, and photography, Beddagana Wetland Park is the perfect destination. Pack your camera, head there early, and enjoy one of the city’s greenest treasures.
