Minneriya National park
If there’s one wildlife spectacle in Sri Lanka that truly takes your breath away, it’s “The Gathering” at Minneriya National Park. This dry zone park, located in the North Central Province, is famous for one of Asia’s most incredible natural events: hundreds of Asian elephants coming together in the grasslands around the ancient Minneriya Tank.

Passing through Habarana, you’ll find the main entrance right on the road, making it easily accessible for visitors. I’ve visited Minneriya several times, and each trip offers a slightly different, yet equally mesmerizing experience. The highlight is always watching the elephants in action – feeding, bathing in the river, and socializing in large herds. It’s impossible not to feel awe in the presence of these magnificent animals.
You can hire a jeep near the park entrance, or sometimes your lodge or hotel nearby can arrange one for you. Either way, getting into the park early – or timing it for the evening – is key. In my experience, evenings are magical. The soft light of the setting sun makes the elephant gatherings along the river even more dramatic, and you get perfect photo opportunities. I’ve captured some of my favorite shots of elephants here, with the plains stretching out behind them and the famous tuskers showing off their grandeur.

Minneriya isn’t just about elephants. While “The Gathering” steals the show, you’ll also find spotted deer, buffalo, wild boar, and a rich variety of birds like painted storks and pelicans. The mix of grasslands, forests, and wetlands creates a picturesque setting, and the historical legacy of King Mahasen’s reservoir reminds you of the fascinating connection between human ingenuity and natural ecosystems.
For anyone planning a safari in Sri Lanka, Minneriya is a must-visit. Witnessing “The Gathering” is like seeing the pulse of the wild itself – an unforgettable experience that combines drama, beauty, and the pure thrill of wildlife in its natural habitat.
