Avanka Fernando is a Sri Lankan wildlife photographer whose work is rooted in a lifelong connection with nature. Growing up across different parts of the island, he developed a deep appreciation for the country’s diverse landscapes and ecosystems.
What began in 2006 as a simple curiosity – capturing flowers for presentations – soon evolved into a dedicated pursuit of wildlife photography. Over the years, his journey has taken him through Sri Lanka’s most iconic locations, including Yala and Wilpattu National Parks, as well as the wetlands of Colombo.
Each collection reflects years of field dedication across Sri Lanka’s national parks and protected
ecosystems.

Talented wildlife photographer Avanka Fernando is based in Sri Lanka and his spectacular wildlife photos have brought him global acclaim. Winning third place in the mammal category of The Wild Lens Wildlife Photographer of the year in 2020 brought him to our attention. His stunning photo of a leopard in a tree was magical and gave some insight into the beautiful Sri Lankan wilderness. He handled both the tree and the lovely cat so well, showing a collective talent for wildlife and landscape photography. Born in 1986 and involved in the educational field, he has been honing his wildlife photography skills for almost the last decade. However, he really has pushed further in the last five years. It’s paying off! Avanka attributes his success to his frequent travel to the national parks and wetlands around Sri Lanka to capture remarkable species in flora and fauna. Mr Fernando’s objective is to bring wildlife to as many people as possible and help conserve the precious animals of our planet. Look for beautiful things from this talented young photographer.
