Kaudulla National park

If you’re looking for a place in Sri Lanka where elephants truly reign, Kaudulla National Park is it. Often called the “land of elephants,” this park is one of my favorite wildlife destinations, and I’ve been fortunate enough to visit it a couple of times.
Kaudulla is part of an incredible network of protected areas in the North Central Province, linking with Minneriya and Wasgamuwa National Parks. This connectivity is vital for wildlife, especially elephants, allowing them to move safely between habitats. The park itself centers around the ancient Kaudulla Tank, a massive reservoir built by King Mahasen. During the dry season, this water source becomes the heart of the park, drawing large herds of elephants who come to feed, socialize, and enjoy a refreshing drink. Watching these gatherings is nothing short of mesmerizing – giant tuskers mingling with young calves and playful juveniles is a scene you’ll never forget.

But Kaudulla isn’t just about elephants. The park’s grasslands, forests, and riverbeds support a variety of other wildlife, from wild boar, deer, and monkeys to crocodiles basking along the water’s edge. Birdwatchers are also in for a treat, with pelicans, storks, eagles, and countless other species calling Kaudulla home.
For anyone interested in elephant behavior, this park is a fantastic place to observe and even conduct research. The way these majestic animals interact, graze, and move in herds offers insights that you can’t get anywhere else. On my visits, I often found myself simply watching and soaking in the atmosphere, camera in hand, feeling lucky to witness these magnificent creatures in their natural environment.

What I love most about Kaudulla is its balance – while it’s rich in wildlife, it still maintains a relatively peaceful and calm atmosphere. Every safari here feels personal, like you’re truly part of the wild.
For me, Kaudulla isn’t just a park; it’s a window into the lives of elephants and a reminder of the importance of conservation. If you’re planning a wildlife adventure in Sri Lanka, make sure to spend time here – you won’t regret it.
