Welcome to my ‘Wildlife photography with Avanka Fernando’ page which illustrates the diversity of Wildlife photography.

I’m an international award winning Nature & Wildlife photographer, born in the Pearl of the Indian Ocean – Sri Lanka. Capturing the beauty of flora and fauna in Sri Lanka is one of my favourite hobbies. Throughout the past years I was able to capture many species across the country, such as leopards, elephants, birds, insects etc., & their behaviour.

My favourite places in Sri Lanka where I spend my time photographing the beauty of nature & wildlife are, Wilpattu National Park in the North Western province and Yala National park in the Southern province and my ‘all-time favourite’ morning walk locations are the Diyasaru & Beddagana Wetland Parks in Colombo.

My aim is to capture the fascinating beauty of nature and create awareness in wildlife conservation while exploring the means to protect the nature flora and fauna. As you scroll down this page you will find a unique flavour on wildlife photography and some significant information on different species.

International Garden Photographer of the Year 2023

This image titled ‘Tasty’ was awarded 1st place in the Wildlife in the Garden Category in the International Garden Photographer of the Year 2023 competition in the UK.

Under the soft glow of a slightly cloudy morning, the world of nature unfolded its daily drama. A delightful scene unfolded – several squirrels, agile and playful, traversed the green grass, engaged in the pursuit of both play and food. Positioned strategically, I found myself in the perfect spot, anticipating another day of capturing the essence of these energetic beings.

Amidst the lively commotion, a particularly smart-looking squirrel emerged. Standing tall despite its small stature, it surveyed a stem of grass with a discerning gaze, as if contemplating. In that moment, it seemed to exclaim, “This looks yummy!”

For months, I had sought to freeze this precise instance in time, and on this fortunate day, my patience bore fruit. The culmination of this quest materialised in the click of the camera, immortalising the squirrel’s charming expression and its declaration of a tasty find. It is a testament to the thrill of observing and capturing the small, delightful moments that nature graciously unfolds for those willing to patiently witness and appreciate its wonders.
