Yala Nationa park
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve visited Yala National Park, but every time I visit this park it never gets old. Every single trip feels like a brand-new adventure.
If you’re dreaming of a true Sri Lankan safari experience, Yala is the place to be. From dense forests to golden grasslands and peaceful lagoons, the scenery alone is worth the trip – but the wildlife? That’s something else to talk about – and experience.

Let’s talk about the real stars of Yala – the Sri Lankan leopards. This park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and honestly, it’s one of the best places I’ve ever been to see them in the wild. I’ve had some incredible encounters here, and getting to photograph these majestic animals up close is something I’ll never forget.
And it doesn’t stop there. Over the years, I’ve captured elephants casually crossing the road, sloth bears wandering through the bushes, crocodiles soaking in the sun, and countless species of birds. Every safari feels like stepping into a live nature documentary.

Most of my drives happen in Block 1, which is where the action usually is. You’re constantly on edge – in the best way possible – because you never know what might appear next. From a leopard dozing off on a tree to trumpeting herds of elephants, and a symphony of birds in the distance – its survival of the fittest and you have front row seats.
What makes Yala even more special is the mix of nature and history. Hidden within the park is the beautiful Sithulpawwa Rock Temple, adding a spiritual touch to the whole experience.
Pro tip: visit during the dry season. That’s when animals gather around water holes, and your chances of spotting wildlife increase. Some of my all-time favorite shots have come from these moments.

Speaking of photos… Yala has been incredibly kind to me. I’ve managed to capture several award-winning images here, which makes this place even closer to my heart.
At this point, Yala isn’t just a destination for me – it’s a story I keep coming back to. If you’re a wildlife lover, photographer, or just someone chasing unforgettable experiences… this place needs to be on your list.
