Diyasaru Wetland park
If you’re in Colombo and craving a bit of nature without leaving the city, Diyasaru Park is an absolute gem. Nestled near the bustling neighborhoods, this urban wetland is a peaceful oasis where you can escape the noise and witness wildlife thriving right in the heart of the city.
I’ve visited Diyasaru Park many times, and each visit feels rewarding – especially for bird and wildlife photography. In fact, I’ve captured some of my award-winning shots here! The park is open to the public, so anyone can buy a ticket and enjoy a stroll, but here’s a tip: go early in the morning, even as early as 6 a.m. By 8:30 a.m., more visitors arrive, and wildlife tends to hide, making it harder to spot birds and reptiles.

The park itself is beautifully designed around a branch of the Diyawanna Lake. Wooden boardwalks and bridges wind through the marshes and ponds, giving visitors unique vantage points for observing wildlife. The structure of the park adds a special charm – you feel immersed in nature while still in the city.
Diyasaru is home to a wide variety of birds, including resident species like kingfishers, herons, and egrets, as well as migratory waterbirds that visit seasonally. You can also spot reptiles, fish, amphibians, and insects, making it a small but vibrant ecosystem in the middle of an urban landscape. For photographers and nature enthusiasts, even a short morning walk can provide incredible opportunities to capture wildlife.

Beyond its beauty, Diyasaru Park plays a crucial role in urban conservation. It helps filter and manage water from the surrounding areas, mitigating flooding while educating the public about the importance of wetlands.
For anyone in Colombo wanting a quick nature escape—or a chance to capture stunning wildlife photos – Diyasaru Park is the perfect spot. Go early, take your time on the boardwalks, and enjoy this unique slice of wilderness in the city.
